Confessions of an Immigrant- 9

It took me 5 months to realise that writing confessions on my blog gives some sort of peace to me. My tired mind gets relaxed while writing it. The past two months have been a roller coaster ride. I hardly knew what the hell was I doing and where I was going. The non stop assignments, tests made me so busy that I didn’t even get a single minute to think like what the hell was I doing with my life.

The days in Canadian lifestyle have never been good for an immigrant. At times it is the never ending homesickness, the grief of losing your loved ones, the situations, managing finances, trusting wrong people and to add more, the jobless times. There are times when you feel homeless inspite of living in an apartment. Sometimes you are so alone in your class. You have a company of 39 more classmates still it feels lonely. Only at the time of in class you realise you have classmates as thats the time you talk to them.

In this one semester I guess I have lived those segments which I have never went through in my past 21 years. I ended up meeting wrong people at wrong time and made mistakes which could have avoided. I won’t say I am sad, upset or depressed. In fact a feeling of aggression hover over mind where I badly want to do soemthing but I can’t. I try to mend the broken pieces of my life but always end up breaking new pieces. Every time the struggles are doubled or tripled. When we were in school we were taught two things, “HELP OTHERS!” ” BE A TRUE FRIEND TO SOMEONE WHO IS IN NEED!” Well, thankyou my dear teachers for these two things but unfortunately in Canada the situation is reverse. Canada goes with three rules, “THINK ABOUT YOURSELF!” “NEVER HELP OTHERS!” “NEVER TRUST OTHERS, NOT EVEN YOUR CLOSED ONES!”

IMG_20170520_102117_889

After going through a major down phase I realised this thing. Sometimes you learn by falling down. But what you learn from that downfall makes you. It is your life and you make the best out of it. The exam phase taught me one thing about teachers. They are generous in giving marks and adjusting the scores. These assignments actually saved us. Even in Canada bad things happen to Teachers. They are misjudged. Here also, our teacher was accused of something which for which she was not at fault. She was hurt and left the college. She performed the duty of a true teacher by conducting the exams. She could have left the job immediately. But she never did. When she hugged me and cried, that was the moment I realised, how dedicated she was. The whole semester she was telling us about the major assignment and she gave us extensions for that. After all that struggle and hardwork we got our grades but what she got? An accusation! I have never seen such a behavior and ached my soul. This incident actually made me respect her even more. Before going she told me, Surbhi, now you have a story to tell to your readers and here I am writing about her. I can only say, I will miss you Mila.

IMG_20170502_203003

Today I was in my most bad spirits when all of sudden out of the blew my friend called me. She knew I was not in a good mood. And to make the mood light she asked me to tell everything what was going on my mind as she has gone through all those things in these 3 years so she can imagine my situation. I felt light after telling her my thoughts and made it lighter by telling her about her situations and how she found a way out. She made me realise that there is a way out to everything. Its just you need to figure them out and sort it in the best possible way. At times you have to put a major cut down on things you want to have and at times you need to sacrifice your sleep to earn something. Hard work pays off. She cited those girly examples which actually cor- related to the things. I felt a bit sorted in my mind while talking to her. So immigrants, if you ever feel in that situation, talk to a friend, listen to a song. For me its talking to a friend who has gone through so much and writing my thoughts out so that I can be at peace.

IMG_20170419_232353_175

Parents are always with you. Sometimes you end up making mistakes but its parents who will listen to you, love you and give you the right direction. Your parents are your family and trust me, nobody will come to rescue you or help you when you will be in need. At times, you can manage on your own but then their are cases where everything can’t be managed on your own. Maybe its best to talk to them and tell them how you feel about them. Since you are away and busy, you can’t tell them how much you care about them, you can’t express your true emotions. At times you need to tell them the best things that has happened to you but back home its night and you have to wait for the morning. Now in morning you are late and you are unable to call them and tell them the news. Then the news become a casual story. And here comes the misunderstandings. Love is on both side but this stupid moron distance and time gap acts like an evil. Same goes with friends and relatives. The best taunts you ever hear is “You have gone so busy or you have forgotten us.” Nobody has ever forgotten you, you will always be there in the heart, its just the time and priorities which have changed.

IMG_20170418_011710

I have cleared my semester1 and now one more to go. Things can be harsh and harsher but you should know that you are a fighter and you have to fight every battle alone and inspire yourself all the time because your parents, friends and relatives will never be there with you all the time. It is you and you only who has to work hard, make them proud and bleed till you succeed.

Book Review of Riots of Love

Riots of Love or Mohabbat Ke Dange by Shikha Kaul is a revolutionary thriller. This is her third book and those who have read her other two books can make out the difference. The author sees to experiment alot with the genres and concepts. This book is exceptional and with such type of stories, you are at loss of words.

717eXIdHsNL.jpg

The cover of the book surely grabs your attention and it makes you think that it is related to border as we see a line and this reminds us of Hindustan Pakistan Border line. But the story has something else in store for us but this cover arise the hunger to read the book soon.

The title is just marvalous and it is related to a campaign. The author seems to have been inspired by that. The story revolves around the title and it justifies the theme of the story. The interesting fact about the title is its hindi title. Mohabbat Ke Dange has its own essence and it turned out to be a blessing for the book.

Avi Shandilya claims to have killed the young children of four very influential men of India belonging to four different religions and bearing the extremist ideologies. Aatif Khan, one of the top Film stars in Bollywood Saahitya Nath, a strong politician and the leader of a Hindu group Andrew James, a renowned anchor on a leading news channel Jaswant Singh, a top politician in Punjab standing for next elections The world is shocked to see such ghastly and cowardly act by the man who founded ‘Mohabbat Ke Dange (Riots of Love)’, a campaign that stands for unity, peace, communal harmony and humanity. Will the fathers of the dead children take revenge or are there more mysteries left to be unfolded? Will Avi’s supporters stand by him after his inhumane crime? A gripping tale of patriotism and thrill that will give you chills and force you to think and discover the concealed version of everything that goes around.

The plot is neatly woven and this book shows a thorough research. It might look controversial but it is not. It is just a simple thought which is delineated beautifully through various characters.

The characters are lively and fantastic. Avi Shandilya is a motivational character who not only motivates the other characters but also the readers. Aatif Khan, Andrew James, Jaswant Singh, Saahitya Nath plays a significant role and their children brings a ray of hope and revolution.

This is not only a patriotic thriller but has traces of social novel in it which further has elements of suspense, mystery in it. The concept of flashbacks, stream of consciousness, point of views makes it enteratining. We can also notice wit, humour in it. This book also focus on real life events which have brought a tremendous change in the society.

I am much familiar to the style of writing of Shikha Kaul. She uses simple yet powerful language and can lure you with her thoughts. For a moment you can even picturise the whol novel in your mind. At the same time, it keeps you in deep thoughts and when your guesses are proved wrong, thats the time where the author wins our hearts. As mentioned, this book is in process of movie making and no doubt, it surely deserves it. The twist and turns are the key features along with the sarcasm and witty dialogues used in it. This book is a must read book and I am glad that I picked up this book.

There are a few authors in India who do not fear to take the upstream path and experiment with genres rarely touched by the regular writers. Shikha Khanduja Kaul has carved a niche for herself in a span of less than two years since she entered the world of literature. Dedicated to her passion for writing and exploring fresh ideas in fiction with every new work, she has already penned down four books that cover a romantic fiction – ‘Hidden Husband’, a murder mystery – ‘DNA-Dad’s Not Adopted’, a patriotic thriller – ‘Riots of Love (Mohabbat Ke Dange)’, and a yet to be published psychological romantic thriller.

Book Review of A Knotty Affair

A Knotty Affair by Dhaval Birajdar Jinadatt is Published by Leadstart Publishing Private Limited. This book has two stories running parallel and meets at the end. The use of Flashback technique is apt.

41d27-awk2l-_sx319_bo1204203200_

The first  look decides that whether you want to read the book or not. Honestly speaking, this cover might not appeal to people those who go for the book cover but people who go after the main thoughts while surely feel attracted as the cover, though not so good shows a connection between sky and water. If we analyse these two can never meet. Hence, through this the author is trying to tell us that he has a story just like this. Then with this approach, the cover surely makes sense.

The title gives us a vibes of an erotica whereas its just a misleading thought. The book is not at all an erotica and has a contrasting them with a totally poles apart plot.

“A Knotty Affair is a story about a thirty-year-old software engineer, Viraj Sargaokar.
Born into a middle class family that lives in the suburbs, he joins a south Bombay college, where he encounters a culture divide between him and his rich classmates, who ridicule him in various ways, making his college life a hell.
With a father that is a disciplinarian and a professor in the same college, Viraj’s only consolation is his mother. His mother thinks the world of her son and stands by him through all his struggles.
Viraj is fascinated by a classmate Ruhi, a beautiful good-natured girl, who be-friends him and treats him well, unlike the rest of his classmates.
Life changes drastically for Viraj, when his honest professor father is accused of bribery and arrested.
Will Viraj be able to prove his father’s innocence?
Will Viraj survive the rigours of college life and overcome his shortcomings?”

The story revolves around Viraj Sargaokar who is a victim as well as a survivor of bullying.  Whereas, his father is an honest man who is accused of taking bribe. Ruhi is the female protagonist who enters Viraj’s life and from then they have been sharing an on and off relationship. The plot is just fine but could have better. The parallel plots makes it interesting for a change.

The author has done wonderful job in characterization. Viraj’s character is the most loved as the way he handles all those bullies and get affected. Further, how he becomes confident from an underconfident guy. This story is Viraj’s journey and its full of struggles, be it winning Ruhi’s heart or proving his father’s innocence.

Ruhi is a simple, confident girl and is again connected to her college friend Viraj through a wrong phone call. A wrong phone call changed her life forever. She is ambitious and the way she handles her friendship with Viraj in college and then after that is impeccable.

Important Messages:

Bullying is a crime and it should be taken care of. Many guys commit suicide because of this. The shyness in behavior or the physique should never be judged. It is a personal choice. Nobody has the right to tease anyone or torture the mind of a person.

The author talks about how people change at times of adversity. This is a true fact. And the thought: Never get connected to an institution in fact love your job and get connected to that.

The style of writing is simple, lucid and clear but too much clarity makes it absurd and boring. The language could have been better though the flashback technique is flawless. The book is short though it has 228 pages but the short pages makes it easy and one can complete the book in one day only. The editing and proof reading needs attention. The plot construction had some loopholes in it. One question remains unanswered as Who was behind the bribery case?

Pre- Release Review: Her Last Wish

It gives me an immense pleasure that I am the first one to read and review this book. Her Last Wish by Ajay K Pandey is his second book. This book talks about love in a unique way. Further, the elements of morality story can be seen in this piece.

Full_Cover.jpg

Cover- The cover is mesmerising, soothing and eye pleasing. One can feel that the two people in the cover are in love. This cover has beautifully highlighted one point,”It is important to be with each other”

Title- The title is simple but has a deeper meaning which we comes to knowin the end. Its not just the wish but the infinite love of a husband for his wife. The story revolves around it.

Genre- This novel can be categorised as a Romance or a Tragedy.

Blurb- Her Last Wish is a story of a guy burdened with his father’s  expectations and mother’s over protective rules. Then love walks into his life as his life partner. The story is his fight with the world and even destiny as he tries to pull his wife out of the clutches of a fatal disease, trying to fulfill her wishes and making her happy.

Plot- The plot construction is gripping and it surely keeps you glued till the end. The story is about Vijay who is a hopeless man. But when he gets married to Astha, a confident girl life changes for him. The way he handles her disease is the rest of the story. The story is unpredicatable. It looks simple to crack to the code but as you progress in your reading your notions are proved wrong.

Ad01.jpg

Characterization- The author has surely played with the minds of the characters. The best part is, all the characters in this story are round characters as everyone undergoes a change in the latter half of the novel. It is often stated that the protagonists are the favourite characters. They are always, but this time, I felt more connected to the supporting characters because without their role, the story would have no meaning. I am impressed by the mother and father of Vijay who are the pillars of this novel. The way they helped in the progression of the story is impeccable. I would say no father is like Vijay’s father and no mother is like Vijay’s mother. Vijay’s father played the role of a true friend in the lives of Vijay and Astha whereas Vijay’s mother is a confident woman whose love is unexplainable.

Highlights of the Novel

Ad02.jpg

The book talks about morality. This takes us back to the ancient drama times where Morality Plays were shown. Well, these morality plays were based on human virtues like anger, sadnees, happiness, revenge, forgiveness. This novel has one of these virtues which are beautifully highlighted hence, I could make out that this is a morality story.

The Epistolary technique of novel writing used by author is an icing on the cake. These letters are in form of point of views of different which surely takes away the hearts of the readers.

Style- The style of writing of the author is surely unique. It is neither simple nor complicated yet it has some different essence of novel writing. Maybe the author writes as a husband, thats he can bore such emotions which just melts your heart and force you read the story. Some of the lines are heart touching and can become axioms in near future. The descriptions, editing are perfect. i would say the author has experimented with multiple point of views which is a huge risk but according to me, this is worth it. This book has surely stolen away my heart and I would strongly recommend you all to read it.
